Quick Update

It has now been one month since I returned from the orphanages on Sumba, Timor and Bali. I have been busy showing the video documentary of the trip to help raise awareness of the needs. It has been encouraging to see even young kids helping to send packages of dried food to the orphanages on Sumba and Timor. My sincere apologies for not getting to the many questions and comments on the website and facebook page. As of this morning, I have exactly one thousand – one hundred and thirty two emails that I still have not gone through. Many of them are people that would like to make visits soon to the children in Bali or are wondering how they can help, so I feel horrible to only now be starting to get back to people. Please be patient as I expect it to take about 2 weeks to fit in all of the corresponding I need to do.

Many people have been wondering if they can help “Regina,” the 9 year old girl in the video. We are currently getting together the exact costs of the surgery she needs and should know within the next week. She is in no immediate danger, but the sooner she gets the surgery the better simply for her comfort and quality of life.

We will be using all of the funding from selling bracelets online to fund her surgery as well as the basic needs of the orphanages on Sumba and Timor. The orphanages on Bali in Tuka and Negara are doing very well financially thanks to the many visitors they have, so this allows to focus our attention on the needs of these other two places. Please have a look at the 42 minute documentary to get a better perspective on how drastic their needs are. We left them with just over one month’s funding of their basic needs and food, but would like to wire them more as soon as possible. You can help in this by getting word out of the bracelet website www.give-jewelry.com

It’s off to answering emails for me now…

Thank you so much to each of you for how you have helped these kids. You have done a very honorable thing by reaching out to the less fortunate.

Your kindness will never be forgotten,

Charlie Halsell

Updates and Photos on Sumba and Timor Orphanages

It’s 6:30 am here in Bali. It took all night to upload photos on our facebook page with such a slow internet connection – so I have to just put a link to them for you here: Sumba and Timor Indonesia Photos This trip so far has been everything from shocking to amazing and inspiring. I have never seen that level of poverty. I need to get a bit of sleep – but I hope to have a detailed post here on the trip and the needs of the orphanages at the end of today. Thank you so much to each of you for your prayers and support of these children. More coming later… charlie

How Cool Is This: Someone’s First Encounter With The Bali Orphanage

A First Visit to The Bali Orphanage

Earlier this week I was surfing next to the pier in Pismo Beach California. During a lull in the waves I heard someone mention going to “Indo’ in a few days.” I had never met this surfer before, so it felt a bit strange to paddle over to him and ask

“I know this might seem weird because I just met you, but would you mind taking some clothes and other donations to an orphanage there in Bali?”

“Will you  be stopping in Bali?” Plus my intentions were somewhat selfish. (I have not been able to visit the children and Sisters since December now – so we have boxes and boxes of donations that have piled up here in our office thatwould normally go with us ever few months) “yeah! ,” he said. “I’ll be there for 3 weeks actually.” Jackpot! I thought. “I know this might seem weird because I just met you, but would you mind taking some clothes and other donations to an orphanage there in Bali?”

“Oh yeah, no problem!” he answered without hesitation.

A few minutes later we exchanged names and then a outside set came so right before the wave broke in front of us I hollered “Just remember ‘the-bali-orphange.com” “get ahold of me through the website!” and then wondered if we would ever connect after that.

Well we did! I got an email from him mentioning he was taking the train to the airport the next day at 2pm and that he could pick up the donations before then. I saw this email on my phone as my wife and I and our 4 kids walked out to see the sunset from the end of the pier. I called him right away and half an hour after every sign of the sunset was gone, we were at “Willie’s” house – just a mile or 2 from our own. Up to this point we had only seen each-other so we were still technically “strangers” – but we exchanged hand shakes, well wishes and a few Indo tips. (Willie’s surfed all over South America, but this was his first Indo trip)

To make a long story longer….

I just got an email from both Dewa and Willie. (swell is pumping right now by the way) They will meet each other later today! So cool to see how this whole thing unfolded and I’m encouraged by Willie’s “why not!” attitude. He is a good guy.

Hopefully I will be able to share a bit more of his trip and visit to meet the children – but in case I don’t – here’s a link to the comment thread as it unfolded on facebook this week.  https://www.facebook.com/givejewelry/posts/222050457832344

As exciting as this was for me to experience, I know that there are so many stories of people’s first found out about and made their 1st visit to the children, Sisters and staff in Tuka. Please encourage others and share YOUR story of how you first came to know about this special place. Just use the “Leave a Reply” box below.

Scarlett Fever

Gede Agus Eka Saputra, 12 Years old

Scarlet fever has affected about a dozen of the children in the orphanage this past week. For the most part everyone is being treated as out patients, but Gede Agus age 12(in the photo) and Dewa have had to be treated at the local hospital. They are both recovering, but can use your prayers. For our recent visitors, pl…ease check this link to see if you are experiencing any symptoms and see the recommended treatment. http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/skin/scarlet_fever.html Dewa has a laptop at the hospital w him and is already sending out notes when he can.
